I'm assuming by now that you've all heard about the murder of Dr. George Tiller. If not, check it out
here and
here.
Now I don't know how many of you know my personal feelings on abortion but let me put it briefly. My body, my choice. All right? Ok.
I'm not interested if you think abortion is wrong. I don't care if your opinions about it are COMPLICATED. And I also don't care if you think late-term abortions, the sort that Dr. Tiller's clinic was famous for providing, are wrong. I just don't care.
The point is this: Dr. Tiller was a man dedicated to providing women with the sort of quality care all women should be entitled to. He did provide late term abortions and was, in 1993, shot by an anti-choice person for doing this. Most people would have given up. He did not. He kept his clinic open, kept saving the lives of women who had no where else to go.
I don't care what you think about abortion, I don't care if you're pro or anti-choice. The point is that a man was murdered this morning, this morning in his church. He wore a bulletproof vest to work because of the threats on his life, so the anti-choice loon followed him to his church, where Dr. Tiller would never have seen it coming.
It breaks my heart that he was killed. He did so much for so many women and that some terrorist (because, my friends, that's what this is) decided to kill him.
It makes me wonder, what can we do against such evil? What can we do against such hate and violence? I don't have the answer but I have made some decisions. Upon my return to NYC, I will be volunteering at Planned Parenthood. It isn't much but it is a step in the right direction. We need to show the terrorist anti-choicers that we will not be intimidated. Where they strike down one, more will rise. We will not give up just because they have guns and hate and violence on their side. We are more than that. Dr. Tiller was more than that.
My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family now. I hope they find peace and love in this terrible time. I hope we all can.
